And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing
threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven;
neither is there respect of persons with him. (Ephesians 5:9)
While the Lord’s command for workers to submit to their bosses
often meets jeers from the employee’s and cheers from the
employers; let us not forget that God’s Word is never partial
or prejudiced. Our final thoughts in the submission series
deals specifically with how an employer is supposed to treat
those that serve and work under them and offers four valuable
tidbits of information;
First , He must seek their welfare. "Do the same things
unto them." If the employer expects the workers to do their
best for him, he must do his best for them. An employer should
never expect or demand anything of his employee’s that he is
not willing to do himself. He must not exploit them. An
employer is to use his authority "as to the Lord," just as
workers are to submit to authority "as to the Lord."
Second, He must not "forbear threatening". The term
suggests the idea of loosening up, or releasing. Implying one
that uses his authority and power as little as possible and
does not throw his weight around or lord it over those under
him, and is never abusive or inconsiderate. The negative power
of fear could result in the worker doing less- instead of
more.
Third, He must be submitted to the Lord "knowing your
Master also is in heaven". Jesus said the way to be a ruler is
first to be a servant (Matt. 25:21). The person who is not
under authority has no right to exercise authority. (Perhaps
this is why many of the great men of the Bible were servants
before God made them rulers: Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, and
Nehemiah.) Even after a man becomes a leader, he must still
lead by serving. "And whosoever will be chief among you, let
him be your servant" (Matt. 20:27).
Fourth, He must not play favorites "neither is there
respect of persons". A Christian employer cannot play
favorites with those under his authority. Paul warned Timothy
to "observe these things without preferring one before
another, doing nothing by partiality" (1 Tim. 5:21). One of
the fastest ways for a leader to divide his followers and lose
their confidence is for the leader to play favorites and show
partiality.
A thorough study on Biblical submission will always reveal
one thing- equality! With proper respect being given to God
ordained positions of leadership, Biblical submission still
requires that all Christians learn to submit one to another.
Submission is the bedrock of relationships because it takes
the focus away from self and centers it on others. Whether it
be martial relationships, parental relationships, or work
relationships; submission to each other is necessary if we are
to avoid friction, fussing, and fighting.
