I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I
have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing:
therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live...
(Deut. 30:19) Choices! We make choices everyday of our life.
Some are made with little or no forethought, some are
calculated carefully and executed with the precision of a
surgeon. The latter is what we would call "smart choices"
while the former would need to be classified as "hasty
decisions".
While we may not experience any immediate, lasting effect
from our "hasty decisions" we are in essence like the
limestone rock under the persistent flow of water. Day after
day the "soft" water is wearing the "hard" rock down, changing
its shape, its appearance, its composition.
And so it is with every decision that you make! You may
chose the lake instead of church on Sunday morning, the mall
on Sunday nights, or to work in the yard on Wednesday instead
of prayer meeting. You may chose to sleep late, stay home and
cook for family and friends, or do your grocery shopping...
but the question is, "what long term effect will today’s
decision have tomorrow?"
The more you chose the things of the world and the
"necessities of life" the less important the things of God
will become. Little by little the devil will wear you down. In
a subtle and non-hostile way, he will lead you out church and
away from the Master. The tragedy is, you will willing go
because "other things" will have been deemed more important.
In this instance you have chosen death over life. Sin over
salvation. Someone has penned a beautiful illustration of this
truth:
On
the table side by side; A Holy Bible and the TV Guide,
One
is well worn but cherished with pride, (Not the Bible, but the
TV Guide).
One
is used daily to help folks decide, No! It isn't the Bible;
it's the TV Guide.
As
pages are turned, what shall they see? Oh, what does it
matter, turn on the TV.
So
they open the book in which they confide (No, not the Bible,
it's the TV Guide).
The
Word of God is seldom read, Maybe a verse ere they fall into
bed.
Exhausted and sleepy and tired as can be, Not from reading the
Bible, but watching TV.
So,
then back to the table, side by side, Is the Holy Bible and
the TV Guide.
No
time for prayer, no time for the Word; The plan for salvation
is seldom heard.
Forgiveness of sin so full and free Is found in the Bible, not
on TV!!
May the choices we make today promote life, and the free
pardon of sin. May we learn to make the right choices in life
and to realize the importance of God’s Word, of prayer, and
fellowship with the saints, as we grow in relationship and
fellowship with our Lord.
