...For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much
required... (Luke 12:48) In the early 1960's Admiral
Rickover wrote a few lines of wisdom and warning to those who
serve at the helm of a ship; "Responsibility is a unique
concept. It can only reside in a single individual. You may
share it with others, but your portion is not diminished. You
may delegate it, but it is still with you. If responsibility
is rightfully yours, no evasion or ignorance or passing the
blame can shift the burden to someone else. Unless you can
point your finger at the one who is responsible when something
goes wrong, then you never had anyone really responsible."
Tough words, but Admiral Rickover never was one to concern
himself with tact, but his grit is needed today more than we
realize. Big projects and meaningful achievements are
accomplished not by dreamers but by doers; not by armchair
generals who watch and frown from a distance but by brave
troops in the trenches; not by fat fans in the bleachers but
by lean committed coaches and players on the field; not by
those who stay neutral and play it safe but by those who get
off the fence of indecision- even though their decisions may
be occasionally unpopular.
It seems that precious few believers are willing to accept
responsibility for the tasks to be done, the truths to be
applied, and the tests to be endured as a child of God. We
often wait or want "somebody else" to do it for us- and then
us enjoy the benefits of it. But ask yourself this question,
"if everyone worked for the Lord like me, how much work would
actually be accomplished?"
What has the Lord placed in your hands? A Sunday School
class? A Bible study group? A prayer list? A committee?
Whatever it is, be careful that you do not handle it
foolishly, recklessly, or frivolously. Handle all things that
are holy and sacred with love and care, for that is the
responsibility of every Christian.
Like it or not, the Lord is keeping a record, and when we
stand before the Righteous Judge, there will be no excuses, no
pointing fingers of blame, no tip toeing around the truth. If
we are going to accept the name of Jesus for salvation, then
we must be prepared to accept the responsibilities that come
with it.
